In order to tackle the challenge of cattle rustling in Niger State, its government says it will invest N91 million on microchips to track the movements of livestock.

The State Commissioner of Fishery and Livestock, Alhaji Zakari Bawa, made this known during a press briefing in Minna.

Bawa who disclosed that the project was approved during the weekly executive council meeting, noted that it would be achieved in collaboration with MTN.

According to him, “Due to the recent happenings in the country on the theft of cattle, this project is meant to put surveillance on livestock to know their movement and whereabouts.

“The advantage of this is that even though the livestock is stolen, the owners can retrieve them through the tracking device.” He added

The commissioner stressed that foreign livestock, especially cattle imported into the state, would be vaccinated to prevent an outbreak of diseases.
