FG moves to support women in agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched the National Gender Action Plan (NGAP) as an intervention plan to improve the abilities of women in the agricultural sector.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, said that the NGAP was to aid women farmers to transit from subsistence agriculture to commercial agriculture.

He said that women were  anchors of the nation’s agriculture and contributed immensely to the development of the sector.

The minister stated that poor access to finance, farm input like; fertilizers, improved seeds, agro-chemicals, farm machineries, access to land, and market access were some challenges women face in the sector.

He added that insecurity was  another major  challenge that women in agriculture face.

In her remarks, the First Lady, Dr. Aisha Buhari, represented by the Special Assistant to the First Lady, Hajo Sani, said that the education of the Girl-Child was paramount in sustainable development of the society.

She enthused that the NGAP would  go a long way in transiting women farmers from subsistence agriculture to modern agriculture.
