Nigeria to commence sales of yam by weight soon- Professor Irtwange

The Technical Committee on Yam Export Programme has said that very soon farmers and marketer will no longer sell yam by quantity but by weight.

The Chairman of the committee, Professor Simon Irtwange, revealed this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.

According to him, the committee presently has its focus on how to introduce the selling of yam by weight.

“We need to bring a change in the way we do our marketing of yam in .We want to standardise the marketing structure in Nigeria, where we will also introduce the sale of yam by weight.’’ He said.

He further stressed that the case had become a need at the moment and so some seed companies would not be selling seeds also by quantity but by weight, with support from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Irtwange added that “We have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding and we have agreed on N400 per kilogramme of yam cutting.”

The chairman stressed that the committee was taking into account ways to ensure uniformity in measurement format for the sale of yam locally to tally with international best practice.
